Making Dance on Staten Island is a roundtable event for local choreographers to connect on the history, the environment, and unique assets/challenges on making dance on Staten Island. This program is facilitated by Melissa West and Rosita Roldan in conjunction with Roldan’s exhibition, Staten Island in Movement. The roundtable will provide space for participants to reflect on their life’s work in the context of oral history. It will also be a space to come together to participate in this diverse community of movers.

Rosita Roldan, professional dancer and choreographer for over 35 years, uses photography to capture the beauty of local dancers as they meld into the landscape.

Melissa West is the Vice President of Curation for the Performing & Visual Arts at Snug Harbor, as well as a practicing dance artist and curator with a background in dance and performance. Ms. West earned a Masters in Performance Studies from New York University. Since 2008, her work has been presented throughout NYC at venues including the Atlantic Salt Factory, Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, The Living Theater, Triskelion Arts, Queens Museum, The Brick Theater, The Greenbelt Nature Center, and the Bowery Poetry Club. An advocate for arts equity, she directed Staten Island’s only art walk, Second Saturdays, from 2012-15.
