Facilities Maintainer

Full Time | Staten Island, NY

THE POSITION

An integral part of the Facilities team, the Maintainer is responsible for general repairs including, but not limited to: electric, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and small engines. The Maintainer is expected to work as part of the team on the day-to-day maintenance, repair, and organization of Snug Harbor’s buildings and grounds. The Facilities Maintainer is a full-time, year-round position. The ideal candidate will have the flexibility to work weekends.

PRIMARY TASKS:

  • Operate, maintain, and repair all systems related to the Snug Harbor campus including, but not limited to:
  • Electrical – general knowledge and ability to repair electrical systems and lighting fixtures
  • Plumbing – general knowledge and ability to repair HVAC systems, replace faucet fixtures, snake pipes, assist in replacing pipes and connections, monitor boilers and air-conditioning systems on site, change belts and filters, maintain site-based water features
  • Carpentry – replace windows and window glass, repair walls, floors, ceilings and doors, install sheetrock, paint interior and exterior;
  • Mechanical – repair small motors and engines, vehicle repair
  • Miscellaneous – asphalt patching, lock repair, powerwashing
  • Operate tools including drills, grinders, table saws, and air compressors;
  • Perform scheduled building checks of mechanical spaces;
  • Perform visual inspections of building systems, preparing punch lists for proposal requests;
  • Complete work orders with diligence and attention to detail;
  • Log and report on assigned information on a daily basis;
  • Complete all work requests of supervisor or manager
  • Move, unpack, and store deliveries to appropriate locations within the building;
  • Collaborate with contracted vendors to perform seasonal or specialty tasks;
  • Participate in grounds cleanup tasks and winter snow and ice removal;
  • Safely operate tools and equipment in compliance with all federal, state, and local safety
    requirements, including but not limited to: trucks, electric vehicles, specialized equipment, small power equipment, hand tools, etc;
  • Use proper personal protective equipment such as face masks, protective gloves, hard hats,
    goggles, etc;
  • Keep inventory of tools, supplies and materials
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 years relevant work experience in general maintenance at a medium to large facility or campus;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks;
  • Self-motivation and proactivity in identifying and executing new tasks;
  • Ability to work with power tools, small motorized equipment, and vehicles;
  • Able to work alone or in groups;
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, sometimes for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on an on-call basis as needed;
  • Ability to acquire required OSHA and FDNY certificates of fitness;
  • Ability to relate well to the public in a highly-visited public space;
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Be personable, a team player, and able to interact with a wide variety of people
  • Job requires employee to walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and regularly lift and/or move 50 lbs., and occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects utilizing proper tools and leverage methods in excess of 75 lbs;
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
