Snug Harbor Honors Loyal Volunteers
June - Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden held it's annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 in the Winter Garden of Building P. The harbor, which became a cultural center in 1976, relies especially on its dedicated volunteers to assist in various ways, from gardening to event staffing. This year's luncheon paid special tribute to Joan Grimm, honored for her Lifetime Achievement in the area of volunteer service, and the husband and wife team of Pat and Al Tachine, named Volunteers of the Year.

TV/Film star Will Forte visits Snug Harbor
June - Will Forte, star of "MacGruber" and "Saturday Night Live" cast member made a guest appearance on "Mid-Evenings with Jay Miller" at the Veteran's Memorial Hall Playhouse on June 23, 2010, as part of the Staten Island Comedy Festival. Forte's appearance topped a cast that also included comedians Kevin Brennan and Nick Turner and featured bits performed by Miller and his hilarious team of performers.

"Mid Evenings with Jay Miller" is a live talk show that has been attracting standing-room-only crowds at Snug Harbor since it's debut here in March (the show got its start at local bar Martini Red in August 2008).

West Gate House Reopens
June -- The West Gate House Entrance has been reopened to the public. Workers from the Department of Design & Construction began final repairs on the West Gate House. The Gate House, which was closed a year ago after being struck by a bus, has been repaired with emergency funding from the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.
Built in 1880, the West Gate was one of several that surrounded the sprawling Sailor’s Snug Harbor. Only three remain today. With the structural integrity restored, the damaged masonry is now being replaced.

The 9/11 Tribute Center has been Re-opened.

May - The World Trade Center Educational Tribute will remain open weekly from Wednesday through Sunday, 10am – 4pm.
The World Trade Center Educational Tribute, which was dedicated on September 14, 2003, is a detached building located in the heart of the Snug Harbor grounds. Surrounded by vibrant annual and perennial plantings, memorial benches, and the restful waterfall of the Lions' Sensory Garden, the Tribute Center serves as an ideal location for quiet reflection. Through artifacts, pictures and multimedia displays, this building will create a sense of shared commonality in the tragedy.

Census Takers Support Immigrant Heritage Week Event
April -- Local Census Takers joined in Immigrant Heritage Week events to promote Census2010.

Local Youth Organize Benefit Concert for Earthquake Relief

April -- Snug Harbor and local youth co-produced a benefit concert and silent auction called Lighten the Load 2010. Featuring local NYC bands The Wind-Up, facsimiles, Revival, The Insomniak, and Jumping, 100% of the proceeds went to Earthquake Relief funds for Haiti and Chile through Partners in Health and World Vision.

Ingrid Michaelson Plays Sold Out Show at Music Hall

March -- One of Staten Island's own, Ingrid Michaelson, performed for a 700-seat filled audience at the historic Music Hall on March 6, 2010 as part of a benefit for the Staten Island Museum.

Freshkills Park Master Plan
February – The Freshkills Park team presented Trash to Treasure on February 23rd, a public program to compliment the exhibition HOPE-A-HOLIC. The program included a history of Freshkills and a presentation about the Park’s master plan and current projects. Following the Freshkills program, a workshop was given by the Staten Island Compost Project outlining the simple steps involved in composting at home. The HOPE-A-HOLIC exhibition explores utopian ideas through 25 works of art and is on view thought June 27 in the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art.
