THE POSITION
Per diem | Staten Island, NY
The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden is seeking Art Handlers on a Per Diem basis to install and de-install multiple exhibitions throughout each season. Art handlers work closely with artists, guest curators, and the VP of Curation to ensure the proper installation and de-installation of gallery exhibitions. Handlers work under the supervision of the VP of Curation and the Visitor Services & Gallery Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Handling and installation of art objects including paintings, framed works, sculptures, mixed media, audio art and video inside 15,000 square feet of gallery space and outdoor locations as needed
• Packing, crating, and preparing art work for shipment
• Installation and de-installation support including painting, labeling, adhering wall text, plaster patches and maintenance
• Working closely with staff, artists, and guest curators to ensure a smooth install and de-install
• Inspection of works prior to display and preparing condition reports
• Ability to lift heavy objects
QUALIFICATIONS
• High School Diploma or GED
• Recommend 3-5 years of previous art handling experience
• Ability to lift heavy objects
• Experience working in a gallery, museum, art institution setting
• Experience working with art objects
• Experience working directly with artists and guest-curators
• Experience using power tools
• Ability to and experience working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a professional demeanor
• Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
• Personable with good communication skills
• Has problem solving skills, and can work well both on a team and alone
• Flexible schedule (installs generally take place M-F, 9-5PM with some variation)
• Carpentry skills are a plus
