Bottom Heavy instantly established itself as a strong new sound; flowing freely between funky instrumentals, dreamy lullabies in soul and blues inflected songs. Marika Hughes fronts the band with such ease and so naturally it makes one wonder why cellos haven’t always fronted bands. Her stylings are reminiscent of her classical upbringing yet defy expectation as she moves us with her supple vocals through jazz, funk, soul, rock, and back again. The band can tip its hat to some of our greatest artists as influences; Gil-Scott Heron, Roberta Flack, Don Pullen, Charles Mingus and Cassandra Wilson, The Staple Singers, to name only a few. As you are charmed by her cello, her voice, and her band, you will be charmed by Marika herself: fiercely authentic, her audience an old friend invited along for the fabulous ride.
