Join Melissa West, Snug Harbor’s VP of Curation and Production, plus DNA of Water curator Sasha Dees and artist Deborah Jack, in a free panel discussion on the themes and impact of the DNA of Water exhibit at Snug Harbor’s Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art.
DNA of Water considers how water has traditionally and simultaneously functioned as border, passageway, and gateway. Using Thomas More’s 1516 book, Utopia, as a jumping off point, curator Sasha Dees invites audiences to ask the questions: How do we as a people relate to our history, our present and future? Are we willing to question history and adapt in the present? Are we willing and able to continuously make the needed changes and reform ourselves to be equipped for the future?
The exhibit is curated by Sasha Dees and features the work of Deborah Jack, Petri Saarikko, Sasha Huber and Simone Bennett.
DNA of Water is on display until September 24, 2017. The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is located in Buildings C & G at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, 1000 Richmond Terrace. General admission to the Newhouse Center is $5 ($4 for students/seniors, free for Snug Harbor Members), and summer hours are Wed-Sun, 10 AM-5 PM.

Deborah Jack is a photo-based artist. Her work deals with trans-cultural existence, memory, re-memory and the environment. She examines the manner in which nature create memorials for the small and monumental atrocities in the multiple histories that have occurred. The work is meant to evoke the sublime: hurricanes, the sea, the shore, and the land are re-occurring aspects. www.deborahjack.com/
Sasha Dees is an international independent curator, producer and writer. She wants to provide a platform for emerging artists who push limits, cross borders and break down barriers. Art for her is about communication, confronting people without imposing, and creating a dialogue that offers a different perspective. www.sashadees.com
