Snug Harbor: The history and community

Meeting at the Carl Grillo Glass House on Chapel Road, we’ll walk through the 83-acre campus. A focus of the tour will be the history of the 19th century campus as well as a look at its current endeavor as a cultural center with diverse botanical gardens. We’ll also look at how the 1965 NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission changed preservation in NYC; Snug Harbor’s iconic Greek-revival buildings were the first landmarks to come out of the commission. The tour will take us through the oldest building on campus, the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Main Hall, 1833) through the gardens and other spaces. This walking tour is a great way to get to know one of NYC’s oldest and largest historical sites.
