Anchoring, the process by which we affix ourselves somewhere, opens up a host of questions and problems. Pulling the term “anchor” from Snug Harbor is a literal and metaphorical process. “Dropping anchor” calls to mind the first step of a nascent colonialism—it calls to mind arrival, and also the setting down of roots in a process that transforms a visitor or settler into an inhabitant over a number of generations. The artists in the Roots/Anchors exhibition parse out the spaces of the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor to create site-specific regions with which to engage, interpret and respond to the act and cultural symbolism of “dropping anchor” or adhering to a place.

Presented by the Dedalus Foundation in partnership with Snug Harbor.
