Join us for a walk through Snug Harbor’s 83-acre campus. The tour will focus on the history of the 19th century campus as well as its present as a cultural center with diverse botanical gardens. We’ll also look at how the 1965 NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission changed preservation in NYC–did you know that Snug Harbor’s iconic Greek-revival buildings were the first landmarks to come out of the commission? The tour will take us through the oldest building on campus– the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Main Hall, 1833)– as well as across the gardens and other spaces that you may never have explored before. This walking tour is a great way to get to know one of NYC’s oldest and largest historical sites.

Each year, in the spirit of the great urban activist Jane Jacobs, MAS hosts 200+ free walking tours led by New Yorkers who love their neighborhoods. Walks are held city-wide all weekend long. Unless otherwise noted in the walk description, no advanced registration is required.
