Come get down and dirty and learn about some of the most popular “weeds” on our campus. Assist Snug Harbor with species management by pulling knotweed, mugwort, porcelain berry, and phragmites from around Snug Harbors campus!

Let’s talk about each of these species and the unique traits that empowered them to outcompete established plants in the area, and even some of potential uses for them. Help us make room for other species on our site by weeding! After clearing, we will discuss organics recycling, and what makes some weeds okay to compost, and others not. On August 6th and August 17th, we will have Urban Park Rangers from NYC Parks with us to talk more about how these particular plants disrupt ecosystems across the city.
The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions.
