NYC Department of Education Borough Arts Festival – Staten Island

The NYC Department of Education’s Borough Arts Festival – Staten Island is proud to return to Snug Harbor to showcase artwork created by students in grades Pre-K through 12 from District 31 and District 75. This exhibition is part of a series of borough-wide events where students will showcase the visual and performing arts projects, they’ve worked on throughout the school year at art galleries, theaters, museums, and public spaces. This year, the student visual arts exhibition will feature approximately 200 exquisite pieces of 2D and 3D pieces of art. Initiated in 2015, the Borough Arts Festival showcases and celebrates the visual and performing arts talents and skills of New York City’s public-school students.

WHEN: May 11 – June 9, 2024 | Friday-Saturday, 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM
and Sunday, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

WHERE: Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor (Building G; entrance at Building G via Shinbone Alley – take the elevator or stairs to the 1st floor/gallery level)

Metropolitan Museum of Art presents: Teens Take the Met

Take your seat on the Teens Take the Met bus from Snug Harbor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art! The annual tradition of Teens Take the Met is one of the most exciting nights of the year. Meet at Snug Harbor grounds at 3:00pm to ride along in style with other art-loving Staten Island teens to one of the best museums in the world. At the end of the event, all participants will be on the bus for a smooth return to Snug Harbor.

WHEN: May 31 | 3:00 PM to catch the bus leaving from Snug Harbor | Estimated time of return to Snug Harbor is between 9:30 PM and 10:15 PM.

In order to book your spot for this (free!) experience, you’ll need to register for a seat on the bus provided by the Met.  Registering with us will include registration for the event.

Please also note the following requirements for this trip:

  • While the Met event is open to all teenagers 13 and up, the bus ride from Snug Harbor is offered only to teens aged 15 – 17.
  • All participants will be required to provide waivers signed by a legal guardian.
  • All participants will be required to review and agree to a “community contract,” which is designed to help set the stage for a welcome, inclusive evening that supports everyone in enjoying an exciting evening out.

Waivers and contract will be provided by May 27 and must be provided prior to boarding the bus. At the end of the event, all participants will return to Snug Harbor, with an estimated return time between 9:30 PM to 10:15 PM.

The Youth Matters program is made possible in part with funding provided by New York City Council Member David Carr.  Snug Harbor thanks Council Member Carr for the generous allocations.

Shinrin-Yoku United presents: Forest Bathing Nature Therapy

Forest therapy, also known as forest bathing, is a nature therapy based on the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku. It is an approach where you take the time to reconnect with nature, with your body, your senses, feelings and emotions. It has recently become one of the well appreciated techniques used to improve your mental health and wellness in an easy, well-accessible way.

The Swans of Harlem Book Launch with Sheila Rohan and Gabri Christa

Celebrate the Staten Island launch of The Swans of Harlem: Five Black Ballerinas, Fifty Years of Sisterhood, and the Reclamation of Their Groundbreaking History by Karen Valby. Sheila Rohan, founding member of the Dance Theater of Harlem and longtime Staten Islander, will be in conversation with Gabri Christa, dance artist, film maker, and professor. They will discuss the trailblazing efforts of the Dance Theater of Harlem while reflecting on their local dance legacies. The artist talk will be followed by a book signing.

About Sheila Rohan
Sheila Rohan is a founding member of Dance Theatre of Harlem, where she was a soloist in Geoffrey Holder’s Dougla, Arthur Mitchell’s Rhythmetron, and more. She was soloist and ballet mistress for the Nanette Bearden Contemporary Dance Theatre and toured China and Korea with the Myung Sook Chun Dance Company. She performed the role of Rosa Parks in Gordon Parks’s televised ballet Martin and, as a choreographer, assisted legends such as Louis Johnson, and Walter Rutledge among others.

SI Community Alliance presents: 4th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival

The 4th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival, presented by the Staten Island Community Alliance, is a day filled with celebration, music, food, and community. Commemorate Juneteenth, a significant moment in American history, with friends and family to enjoy live performances, delicious food, merchandise vendors, and interactive activities for all ages.

The event will be broadcast with a live video feed on a Jumbrotron LED screen with live entertainment for everyone to see from anywhere on the field.
