In a series of thematic installations of garments and photography, Staten Island Mode highlights dress as central to modes of being and practices of self-fashioning. The exhibition is not only a showcase of the variety and diversity of the dressed identities of Staten Islanders, but also the outcome of a curatorial experiment whereby a series of open calls for participation generated an archive of the unexpected that inherently addresses broader questions about what it means to be a Staten Islander and how perceptions and lived realities differ.

The exhibition unfolds over four rooms that adopt different approaches to collecting and interpreting dress – honoring individual stories as well as the presence of fashion design and retailing on Staten Island. The different spaces invite visitors to consider the role that dress plays in their own lives, and to reflect on the ways in which clothing is valuable in our closets, in our memories and in spaces devoted to the display of art and design.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog as well as a dynamic series of public events throughout its run from July 29 to December 31, 2023.

Compost is for NYC residents only. All registrants must show proof of ID upon entry; name on ID must match registration. Only one session registration is allowed per household. Multiple-session registration will result in cancellation of all but one session. Businesses and commercial vehicles will not be served. The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions.

Mulching with compost allows for moisture conservation by slowing evaporation and increasing the organic matter that can hold water.  Mulching also keeps temperatures more even, protecting your tree’s roots as we move through the seasons.  As the compost mulch decomposes, it improves soil fertility and structure. The nutrition in the compost releases slowly, giving roots delicious food through the season.  Of course, mulch also helps reduce unwanted plant growth around the base of the tree, reducing competition for that nutritious soil.

This is a great event for all ages and abilities!  We encourage every volunteer to bring your food scraps to our food scrap drop-off, so we can make more compost. Prepare to take home some compost to mulch your own trees.

Staten Island Mode: Fashion, Identity, and the Forgotten Borough’s LGBTQ+ Community
Oct 5 @ 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

From Audre Lorde to Alice Austen, LGBTQ+ folks have played a vital part in Staten Island’s history. We’ve been community leaders, activists, artists, and most importantly your neighbors. But how does living in the Forgotten Borough impact the way we express ourselves through fashion? Is it in the way we accessorize to signal to other people in our community that we are one of them? Or is it dressing conservatively while on the island, but getting changed into an outfit that fits our true selves in the ferry bathroom?

Join Alexis Romano, co-curator of the new exhibition “Staten Island Mode: Identity, Memory, Fashion” and Allison Nellis, creator of the Staten Island LGBTQ+ History Project, for a community dialogue on how our identities correlate with the way we express ourselves through fashion. With a focus on our images and objects, discussion leaders from the community will invite you to listen or share your own stories.

WHEN: October 5,2023 | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
WHERE: Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Main Hall Gallery, Building C
ADMISSION:  Contribute what you wish ($0-15) | Registration Requested | REGISTER HERE
