Tamara Geisler and her team of collaborators bring legendary artist, activist, revolutionary Tina Modotti to life in her one-woman production of TINA, a new piece with original music and text in collage with Modotti’s own words from Hollywood, post-revolution Mexican Renaissance, and the USSR under Stalin. TINA asks the question: When is a life too unique for any frame?
In line with Tina Modotti’s aesthetic inclinations, selected images by Mexican photographer Irma Bohorquez-Geisler will be on display during the performance.

About PASS: Performing Arts Salon Saturdays
PASS is a curated performance series presented at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Buildings C & G). The salon’s focus is on original works in performing arts (music, dance, theater, and multi-media) in different stages of development. When possible, work is developed in residence at Snug Harbor. Note from choreographer/performer Anjoli Chadha: On my daily commute and in my travels, I often see suffering in the faces and bodies around me. I shake off or stretch out the weight I feel in my back and neck when seeing a woman with no home, hunched over her wagon with the weight of her coat and bags. Seeing the everyday personal suffering and how we are victims of our personal stories is very evocative for me—not just why we suffer, but how some of us choose to stay in suffering.

Created and performed by Londs Reuter and friends, Private Inventory or No Health Insurance is a thinking, moving, and writing-it-down practice that looks more at what choreographs us than what we choreograph. Private Inventory attempts to translate non-verbal, embodied self-knowledge acquired through dancing into written record. From movement practices, we generate writings, surveys, anecdotes, and charts to map out the particularities and generalities of a dancing body. Private Inventory or No Health Insurance assumes that there is no normative body and that we’re all carving out unique ways of moving through the world at all times.

Join us for Newhouse After Dark, a series of after-hours live art experiences in the oldest building on campus.
Cloaked includes a live performance composed by APMD (AJ Pantaleo and Mike DiBenedetto) along with individual and collective dance pieces designed by Jen Gallo and Lys Obsidian. The performance will explore themes such as sexuality, gender identity, and ageism.

Drummer and composer AJ Pantaleo collaborated with former bandmate Mike DiBenedetto to create APMD, an experimental two-piece that combines their love for cinema with experimental soundscapes. APMD was awarded an (Staten Island Arts) Excellence in the Arts award the same year and debut their first performance at the LUMEN Festival that summer. In 2018 they won a NYCDCA Premier Grant to compose and record “Audio Stories”, an audio tour for the Staten Island Museum. https://ajpantaleo.space/
Lys Obsidian, a Staten Island based dancer and performance artist with a background in fusion belly dance and butoh, makes work that explores issues around gender and sexuality. She plays with cultural expectations and perceptions of what it means to be raised female. As a collaborative artist with a love for vaudeville, Lys Obsidian created Kala Lolo to offer a platform for local musicians, poets, and movers to express and subvert gender identity. Lys Obsidian has received an Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs for Kala Lolo in 2015, 2016, and 2018, as well as a 2016 Excellence in the Arts Award and a PASS Dance residency at Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art in 2017.
Jen Gallo is a public health artist, born, raised and living on Staten Island. She produces work in a variety of mediums, including mural art, dance, comedy and ceramic sculpture. All of her work is intended to improve the quality of life of the community by bringing attention to health issues and educating the public with evidence-based information and making people smile.
Artificial Hollow is the conjuring of a dance that was never finished. Loosely inspired by Mayo’s 2012 incomplete duet Man in the City, Artificial Hollow invokes fragments of video, sound, and photographs from this previous work to create a new performance from these “found” materials.
In the spirit of her evolving creative process, Mayo works with various groupings of performers and asks the question: what does it mean to borrow from the past while simultaneously letting it go?

Melissa Riker/Kinesis Project dance theatre’s newest large-scale, outdoor performance, Breathing with Strangers, is a ragged, sweeping and surprising love-song to New York City. Dancers appear and disappear as the choreography twists around and within the levels, buildings, and hillsides of Snug Harbor’s Shinbone Alley.
This project invites the audience to witness, interact, and follow the performance — and consider how generous moments between strangers can occur.
