A hidden world of rare and remarkable plants

Built on the historic site of the original Sailors’ Snug Harbor greenhouse, the Carl Grillo Glass House is a 2,800-square foot haven for extraordinary botanical life. Inside, a unique three-zone heating system creates arid, tropical, and temperate environments—all under one roof—allowing our horticulture team to cultivate rare species and design striking, ever-changing displays.

Dedicated to Carl Grillo, a beloved community leader and award-winning gardener, the Glass House serves as the heart of Snug Harbor’s plant propagation efforts. Throughout the year, it nurtures tropical plants, supports aquaponics, and provides a controlled environment for specimens you won’t see elsewhere on our grounds.

While this special space is not open for daily public access, visitors are warmly invited to explore it during scheduled public tours, which offer an inside look at the plants, growing techniques, and behind-the-scenes work that keeps Snug Harbor blooming.

Discover a hidden side of Snug Harbor—where innovation, beauty, and botanical expertise come together under glass.
