Heritage Farm
Outdoor Exploration
A 2.5-acre farm rooted in centuries-old growing traditions and community care
Established in 2011, the Heritage Farm uses time-tested, low-till methods that support healthy soil, natural pest management, crop rotation, and sustainable composting practices. It’s a living example of how thoughtful farming can nourish both people and the land.
More than a century ago, Sailors’ Snug Harbor grew much of its own food. Today, the Heritage Farm carries that legacy forward, expanding access to fresh, locally grown produce across Staten Island. We focus on education and equity by growing culturally significant varieties and uplifting Indigenous growing practices that honor the land.
While the Heritage Farm is an active production site and not open for daily walk-in visits, visitors can experience it through scheduled guided tours, which offer a closer look at our growing techniques, history, and community-driven mission. Even outside of tour times, you’re welcome to view the vibrant seasonal crops through the surrounding deer-resistant fence, which protects the harvest from local wildlife while giving visitors a window into the farm’s daily rhythm.
Our work extends well beyond the fields. Through partnerships with community organizations—including the NYC Department of Probation, NYC Civic Corps, NYC Department of Education, and NYC Department of Youth and Community Development—we provide food-system education and green workforce training for teens and young adults. Together, we’re cultivating future environmental leaders.
We believe that building a healthier food system requires all of us. That’s why our CSA program and Heritage Farm Stand are designed to increase access and resilience. We offer installment plans, accept SNAP-WIC, and extend discounts to our senior NYCHA neighbors—ensuring that fresh, nourishing produce is within reach for everyone.
At the Heritage Farm, every visit—whether through a guided tour or a peek through the fence—connects you to the land, the history of Snug Harbor, and the community working to grow a more sustainable future.

Our Contributors
The Heritage Farm at Snug Harbor is honored to receive support from New York State Agriculture and Markets, the People’s Garden Initiative of the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Vincent Grupposo Foundation. This support helps keep our produce prices low while providing employment to local residents. Additional support includes the New York City Council’s Community Composting and A Greener NYC initiatives, and Con Edison. We are deeply grateful for these partnerships, which allow us to serve our community’s needs.
