Lose yourself in the magic of the Connie Gretz Secret Garden
The Connie Gretz Secret Garden is a delightful escape for young explorers and families—a whimsical world inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved children’s classic, The Secret Garden. Spanning over half an acre, this brick-walled sanctuary features three enchanting towers, a winding shrubbery maze, and a hidden inner garden filled with greenery, flowers, and cozy benches.
Kids can weave through the maze, search for surprises, and enjoy the sense of discovery that makes this garden such a treasured part of Snug Harbor. The main tower rises two stories with a spiral staircase, offering a sense of adventure—though its upper level is currently closed for maintenance, the lower level still sparks plenty of imagination.
Created with love and devotion by Staten Islander Randy Gretz in memory of his wife, Connie—a beloved teacher who cherished children and storytelling—the garden took four years to build and opened in 2000. It stands today as a joyful, welcoming space where wonder and play come alive.
