Cottage Row
Relaxation
Cottage Row is both a bustling corridor of commerce and a tranquil home base.
Community events like the Cottage Row Curiosities artisan markets, as well as film shoots and performances, create a festive atmosphere along the roadway and inside the cottages. Visual and performing artists-in-residence develop exciting new work while housed in the cottages. Local favorite Egger’s Ice Cream Parlor operates out of Cottage C, and Cottage E is the entrance to the Chinese Scholar’s Garden, one of our most popular attractions. Children have a safe space to reflect in Cottage D, where Emma’s Place Grief Counseling resides.
However, just as the modest buildings on Cottage Row got their start as housing for staff like the commissary, secretary, gardeners, bakers, and farmers of Sailors’ Snug Harbor from the late 19th century to early 20th century, they are still used as living spaces today.
Each of the five cottages is based on the architectural style of the Second Empire in France (1852-1870). Cottage Row used to lead straight to the Snug Harbor cemetery, still located by present-day Allison Pond Park, and was the funeral procession route for Sailors’ Snug Harbor residents when they passed.
