Historic Front Lawn
Relaxation
Almost everything you see on the front lawn today was built to house, care for, and entertain the residents (also called “inmates” or “Snuggies”) of Sailor’s Snug Harbor. The row of five elegant Greek Revival buildings with tall columns, as well as the cast-iron front fence, are some of New York City’s first designated landmarks.
Historically called Temple Row, these buildings currently house the main galleries of the Staten Island Museum (Building A), the future expanded home of the Staten Island Museum (Building B), the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Main Hall Gallery in Building C), the Noble Maritime Collection (Building D), and the currently unoccupied Building E.
Location
Where
The historic front lawn is located on the north end of campus, immediately inside the North Gate, and running parallel to Richmond Terrace.
