THE POSITION
Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden (SHCCBG) seeks a dynamic Director of Finance & Administration (DFA) to provide fiscal leadership and financial management of the organization and hands-on oversite to critical administrative functions including Accounting, Business Development, Human Resources and IT. The DFA is responsible for the organization’s overall financial leadership, strategic financial planning and financial operations management and serves as a strategic partner to the CEO and a key member of the Senior Management Team. The DFA advances the mission of the organization, advising the CEO, Board and/or senior team on all business decisions and practices by conducting financial planning, analysis, forecasting, budgeting and advising on key directions and options for development. The DFA plays a critical role in strategic planning, risk management, and operational strategy as Snug Harbor completes a comprehensive master planning process; kicks of $40+ million dollars of capital projects and infrastructure upgrades; and continues on a course of positive transformative change.
The ideal candidate will have advanced organizational skills, business acumen, strong interpersonal and communication skills and nonprofit experience. He/she will enjoy opportunities to externally represent the organization and be adept at fostering and cultivating stakeholder relationships on city, state and national levels. The DFA will be a great negotiator and influencer, and committed to team development.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Planning & Budgeting
- Manage SHCCBG’s overall budget and finances including supervision of all finance, accounting, billing, and auditing procedures. Develop and coordinate a budget process, working with senior management and department heads to develop annual financial goals
- Oversee the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities for the organization including organizational revenue/expenses and balance sheet reports, reports to funding agencies, development and monitoring of organizational and contract/grant budgets- with support from Directors of Operations and Development
- In concert with and support from staff and consultants developing Master Site Plan and Strategic Plan, develop and coordinate a financial strategic plan for the organization with short and long-range objectives analyzing and identifying new revenue streams and cost effectiveness of prospective program delivery. Contribute leadership and expertise to asset-based business plans and capital campaigns
- Serve as a member of SHCC’s senior staff, participating in the development and implementation of overall policies, long-range planning, and daily operational goals and objectives
Accounting & Administration
- Direct management of the Accounting Department (team of two) including general oversight of the operations including account maintenance and data entry, the approval, updating and processing of ledgers, and the development of systems and procedures for maximum efficiency of departmental operations
- Manage relationship with external auditors; ensure adequate controls and substantiating documentation such that all financial transactions may pass any independent and/or governmental audits
- Coordinate the preparation of financial statements, financial reports, special analyses, and information reports and ensure records systems are maintained and operate in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards
- Lead annual attendance and financial reporting to the Department of Cultural Affairs with support from the Accounting Manager
- Supervise various Human Resources functions to ensure compliance with State and Federal Dept of Labor laws
- Supports Operations & Facilities Depts in risk management initiatives to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations
- Manage the necessary licenses and insurance required to maintain operations; evaluate and make recommendations on insurance requirements and act as point of contact on claims
- Acts as a strategic partner to the CEO in strengthening good governance policies and procedures across the organization
- Provide primary support to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors and work closely with the Board Treasurer
- Responsible for cash flow management with support from Accounting Manager
- Support Office Administrator in overseeing IT contractor
- Oversee the maintenance of the inventory of all fixed assets
- Oversee administration and financial reporting of the organization’s Trust
- Monitor all banking and investment activities of the organization
QUALIFICATIONS
- BS or demonstrated work experience in Business, Accounting, Finance or related field. Experience in leasing, real estate, and/or asset management is a plus
- Familiarity with Quickbooks or similar accounting software
- Minimum five years’ experience in nonprofit financial management, including familiarity with GAAP and experience in a senior financial position of a $1M+ organization
- Demonstrated experience navigating City agencies and contracts; working knowledge of the NYC cultural landscape is a plus
- Supervisory experience with a multi-person staff
- Demonstrated experience as part of a senior staff management team with responsibility for establishing and executing strategy, vision and long-term goals
- Demonstrated experience interacting with a board of directors, external auditors and senior stakeholders
- A passion for management of a cultural institution and/or public space is a plus
- Ability to bring (positive) energy and adaptability to address complex problems and to support staff and peers

Salary is commensurate with experience. Snug Harbor offers a generous vacation/holiday schedule and participation in the Cultural Institutions Retirement System pension plan.
